A nomination that was 53 years in the making

"I am mindful that only yesterday in Birmingham, Alabama, our children, crying out for brotherhood, were answered with fire hoses, snarling dogs, and even death. I am mindful that only yesterday in Philadelphia, Mississippi, young people seeking to secure the right to vote were brutalized and murdered."

Is Lara Logan being smeared for criticizing Iraq war coverage?

Lara Logan used to cover Baghdad for CBS News at the peak of the fighting in Iraq, then became the natwork's chief foreign correspondent, and just a few days ago it was announced that she'll be coming to Washington with a new title as chief foreign affairs correspondent. She has clearly been an up-and-coming star on CBS, where she sometimes appears on the flagship show "60 Minutes." She's been described in profiles as resourceful, certainly ambitious and seemingly fearless.

"There is no longer any doubt as to whether the current administration has committed war crimes."

That quote in the headline doesn't come from Michael Moore or some commenter on Democratic Underground or here at Daily Kos.

It comes from a retired major general of the U.S. Army, Antonio Taguba. It was Taguba, you may recall, that President Bush asked to investigate the original claims of detainee abuse at Iraq's Abu Ghraib back in 2004.

Rush Limbaugh called me a "wacko" yesterday

Rush Limbaugh called me a "wacko" yesterday to his 20 million radio listeners.

I am truly honored and humbled.

Major newspaper goes on witch-hunt for "liberal bias"

Mon Jun 09, 2008 at 07:54:43 PM PDT

Cross-posted by Will Bunch at my Philadelphia Daily News blog, Attytood:

Some sociologists have attributed the occurrence of witchhunts to the prevalent human tendency to blame unexplainable occurrences on someone or something familiar. For example, Europe relied heavily upon agriculture during the period of the witch hunts; if there were large scale crop failures, the consequences would very likely be disastrous. Crop failures often correlated with the occurrence of witchhunts, leading some sociologists to suggest that communities often took out their anger about a lack of food on community members who were unpopular (witches.)

-- Wikipedia entry for "Witch-hunt."

In case you haven't noticed, the crops are failing -- for the 21st Century American newspaper. Drought has taken a huge toll on circulation, and it looks like the boll weevils have been eating through the advertising field. Panic is becoming widespread. The only explanation for so many failures all at once...could be witchcraft. And it's time to "blame unexplainable ocurrences on someone or something familiar."

President Bush committed political treason today

I've seen a lot of sad things in American politics in my lifetime -- the resignation of a president who became a national disgrace after he oversaw a campaign of break-ins and cover-ups, another who circumvented the Constitution to trade arms for hostages, and yet is now hailed as national hero. And those paled to what we have seen in the last seven years -- flagrant disregard for the Constitution, the launching of a "pre-emptive" war on false pretenses, and discussions about torture and other shocking abuses inside the White House inner sanctum.

But now it's come to this: A new low that I never imagined was even possible.

Cheney gives a shot in the face to the Philly economy

That waddling sound we heard here in the Philly area this afternoon was a quick-in-and-out from America's second lamest duck, Vice President Dick Cheney, who snuck in with little fanfare for maybe the most empty photo-op since Ronald Reagan's handlers invented them. Apparently your federal rebate check may come from here in the Philadelphia region, a fact that hasn't sped the arrival of mine yet:

Hi, everyone -- Will Bunch from Attytood at the Philadelphia Daily News back again. Thanks you so much for all the interest this week in our session with Barack Obama and his answer to my question about whether his administration would prosecute the apparent crimes that have been reported in the Bush administration, specifically as relates to torture. After the jump...it's finally on video:

Obama answered my question tonight on prosecuting Bush WH

Hi everyone -- Will Bunch from "Attytood at the Philadelphia Daily News here. Feel free to drop by the blog and do battle with the mostly conservative commentators entrenched there -- that's the reward you get when you try to write a progressive blog at a mainstream newspaper. Anyway, Barack Obama came to the Daily News tonight, and here's my post on whether an Obama Justice Department would go after the Bush White House for torture or other crimes, starting after the jump:

News item:

BURBANK, Calif. (AP) - Sen. Hillary Rodham Clinton made fun of herself Thursday, telling "Tonight Show" host Jay Leno she almost didn't make it to his studio.

"It is so great to be here, I was so worried I wasn't going to make it. I was pinned down by sniper fire," Clinton said after joining him onstage, referring to her claims—since disputed—that she dodged sniper bullets while arriving in Bosnia as first lady. Clinton later said she had "misspoke."

Musharraf on the Schuylkill: Philly's new top cop abused anti-war protestors, civil liberties

Thu Nov 15, 2007 at 07:39:29 PM PDT

Hi guys -- Will Bunch from the Philadelphia Daily News here (full disclosure, for geeks...and working journalists). I'm writing a book on how to revive American media called "The News Fix" for Vaster Books -- the company founded by Markos Moulitsas and Jane Hamsher -- that's coming out next year, and as the release date gets closer I plan to cross-post more of my regular posts from over at my blog, Attytood.

This appears to be a local issue, but it should concern all of us. Philadelphia is in the middle of what it's leaders are calling a "crime emergency". But they've turned to a cop whose stunning abuses against peaceful protestors in Washington, D.C., has already cost that city millions:

That 9/11 column: Appalled Philly DN co-worker's take

Hey -- Will Bunch from Attytood and the Philadelphia Daily News here. For some reason, it's important for me to let you know that we're not all Neanderthals here in Philly and especially at the DN, which is actually for the most part very progressive (first paper in U.S. to endorse Kerry over Bush in '04, for example.) I believe strongly in free speech, but also that wrongheaded speech like this deserves a quick response:
